DIY Teacher’s Tea Towel

Looking for a gift for a teacher that is not going to break the budget but is personalised? Well, that was me last year and this is what I came up with! A set of tea towels that look like lined book pages.

They are a great DIY project for all sewing capabilities and a fun gift your child’s teacher will love. (This would be a great present for Homeschooler mums too, older children would be able to make this!)

Because you are doing this twice, I sewed both tea towels in tandem so that I did not have to keep changing the thread on my sewing machine.

What you need:

  • 2 plain white tea towels (I grabbed mine from Coles)
  • Blue, red and black cotton
  • A thin ruler and a wider one
  • Fabric pencil/chalk
  • Sewing machine
  • Hand embroidery needle.

What to do:

Using your chalk/pencil and your narrow ruler as your guide create a row of horizontal lines running the length of the long side. These will be the blue page lines.

Using the wider ruler, create a line on the left hand side of the tea towel and mark with chalk. This will be the red margin.

Sew along all horizontal lines with blue cotton and simple straight stitch. You will need to reverse stitch at each end to finish each line.

Sew along the margin line using red cotton and simply straight stitch. You will need to reverse stitch at each end to finish this line.

Using your fabric pencil/chalk write the teacher’s name onto the bottom right hand corner of the tea towel, using your blue lines as a guide. Using the black embroidery cotton hand sew, using ‘backstitch,’ over each of the hand written letters.

Once finished, wash on a gentle cycle in your machine, or hand wash, to remove the pencil/crayon mark.

Iron, fold and your all done!
