Saint Of The Week – Saint Adelaide

Saint Adelaide
FEAST: 16th December 2013
Patron of: Large families, brides, second marriages, parent in-law problems.

St Adelaide was an interesting Saint.

St Adelaide’s story begins when her father engaged her to be married, at the young age of two. She was betrothed at age 15 to Lothair of Italy. After his sudden death three years into their marriage, Adelaide was forced to marry his successor, although she refused and escaped to Canossa. She then married a man named Otto and they were crowned pair rulers of the Holy Roman Empire in following years. She established many monasteries and churches throughout her life.

Although it seems as though she lived a life of different marriages, fleeing from one place to another and on top of this became ruler of the Roman Empire at one stage, her faith in God is to be acknowledged and can be seen throughout her life. Her life is so distant to anything we may know. Have you ever met or heard of anyone being betrothed to a man at the age of two?

As St Adelaide is the patroness of large families, brides, second marriages and parent in-law problems, she can be of great inspiration to us. You can remember her in any of your difficulties with these issues or in times when challenges may come about in your life. Lets be challenged by St Adelaide’s life, to see the hope and joy in our own lives.

This image is beautiful as Saint Adelaide gazes above toward her God and future in heaven.
