Foolproof Rainy Day Activities

As a mum of five I can tell you that when I know that there’s rain coming that is likely to result in my children experiencing ‘cabin fever’ the realisation is a little gruesome.

But here are some activities that are perfect for rainy days, and winter holidays when being indoors is inevitable.

  • Indoor camping – you can make your own tent with a few sheets or, a real one and the kids can have a camping trip inside. We use our beach shelter, some sleeping bags, and the floor space in our spare room. The kids loved it, slept in it for a few nights which meant that I could wash and dry their bed linen despite the less than ideal weather.
  • Group drawing – cover your table (part or all) with butchers paper and set up a communal art project where every member of the family can make a mark and fill the space on the paper. Once the whole sheet is full, you can replace it if desired.
  • Scavenger hunt – this takes a little bit of preparation but if you choose a few items from around the house (like favourite toys) and hide them and then send the kids around to find them you are guaranteed to keep them occupied for a good amount of time. Especially if you vary how well hidden they are!
  • DIY puzzles – puzzles are a great rainy day activity on their own but creating your own takes the whole activity to another level. All you need is some paper and drawing supplies for the kids to create their image. Once they have finished it, glue it onto some heavier weight card (nappy boxes are perfect for this) and cut into puzzle pieces.
  • Water painting – if you have an undercover area outside, even just the front verandah, set the kids up with a paintbrush each and a small cup of water. They’ll love painting pictures and the cleanup is easy!
  • Dancing – if you’ve got music you’ve got this. It doesn’t have to be ‘kids’ music just some fun, boppy songs that will get them up and moving because running around outside is not an option.

If you have other fun ideas for rainy days – and keeping mum’s sanity – please share!!
