I love quilts. My grandmother makes beautiful quilts with appliqués and hand embroidered details that I consider already to be family heirlooms. But not all of us have my grandmother’s talent so here’s a simple quilt design that can be tailored to suit your taste. I have used a cheaper batting alternative in polyester (pre-cut cot size from Lincraft) which makes it machine washable and can be purchased in heavier weights if desired. You can use a wool or bamboo batting which is thinner and easier to sew but it’s also a more expensive option).
You will need:
- 1.2m backing fabric
- 1×1.2m polyester batting
- 0.4m in 6 different fabrics
- 6m bias binding in coordinating colour
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Thread
- Pins
- Ruler
What to do:
Cut a total of 120 12x12cm squares from the 6 fabrics.
Pin squares together in alternating rows like this with wrong sides facing:
Repeat until all squares are in rows which look something like this:
Pin rows wrong sides together, 2 at a time and sew.
Repeat.
Lay backing fabric face down and layer batting and then top quilt piece face up.
Pin layers together around outer edges.
Use dressmakers chalk to draw diagonal lines through your squares from corner to corner like this:
Pin on either side of drawn lines. Sew through all three layers.
Pin bias binding around edges.
Sew in place.
Turn over and pin.
Hand sew to underside of quilt.
