Advent Angel: A Christian Alternative To The Elf On The Shelf

For the past few years I have noticed as we neared Advent, how much the Elf on the Shelf phenomenon dominated my social media spaces.

I have to admit, that in amongst writing and scheduling for three websites and their accompanying Facebook pages, I spend a lot of my working time online. Especially as we draw nearer to the end of the year because I like to write and schedule well ahead of time in order to spend time unplugged with my family.

The Elf on the Shelf is a modern tradition where one person hides/poses the toy somewhere in the house each day in Advent for the other family members to find. It’s a creative, and non-spiritual, way to prepare for Christmas and the holiday season.

Recently I’ve seen some of the ways in which the Elf is posed and some are, frankly, inappropriate.

So last year I wondered if there could be a Christian alternative that still had that element of fun, but could also be adapted to take on a more spiritual purpose.

Thus the Advent Angel was born. Many months later I’m pleased to say that she’s now at a point that I can share this idea with others.

The Advent Angel is my Christian alternative to the Elf on the Shelf with a distinct difference.

She is poseable, with bendable arms and legs, and can be hidden through the house each day during Advent in a similar way to the Elf on the Shelf. She is soft and cuddly, which my younger children love, but she also has a pocket sewn into the front of her gown.

The pocket is important. Why?

Because each day in Advent the pocket contains a Bible quote, from either the Old or New Testament, that helps focus our attention on the birth of Christ.

She’s already become a favourite in our house and I hope that she brings us many graces over the Advent season.

Are you going to post Advent calendar activities again and if so, would you give us advance warning of materials required for people like me who shop rarely?
