Movie Review: Captain Phillips (2013)

Captain Phillips is based on the true story of Captain Richard Phillips. In 2009 there was the hijacking of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates..

It is a simple storyline and definitely easy to follow. That said, I was unable to look away for a second throughout the film. This is a movie that is garanteed to keep you on the edge of your seat! You might think it’s intense when the pirates get on board the ship and hold some crew hostage; that is really only the beginning. It does get to a whole other level later on as the intensity of the film continues to build.

What I appreciated about this film is the storyline involving the Somali’s and the world they come from. It lets you see a different side to these people and it is comforting to know the logic behind their ‘evil’ intentions. In many ways they have been forced into the acts of piracy they undertake.

Tom Hanks delivers a truly breathtaking performance.  A terrific movie, suspenseful, dramatic and highly enjoyable.
