Non-Toxic Homemade Paint

This is a great easy recipe to make, from household ingredients. The kids will have a whole lot of fun playing with and hopefully painting with it too! You can adjust the consistency using water, thicker for finger painting or and thinner for brush painting or collage.

I found this recipe while searching online for Homemade Paint that is safe for kids and managed to find this one from “Mummy Musings and Mayhem.” See recipe below.

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons cornflour cornflour-white base
  • Water
  • Food colouring

Method:

1. Boil the kettle. Mix the cornflour in a heatproof bowl with a little cool water to make a smooth paste.

2. Slowly pour some boiling water in while whisking, you will notice it thicken very quickly (much like making a white sauce) so keep stirring or you will get lots of lumps.

cornflour-paintWhen you have the base you can make it thinner or thicker depending on the activity you want to do.

You will need to keep it in the fridge especially if you live in a warm, humid environment but it will last up to 2 weeks. You can tell when it has reached expiry as it will smell. It will thicken (or seem to set) in the fridge but just add some more hot water and stir or leave out a few hours before you want to use and then stir. You can store the paints in recycled baby food jars if you like.
