There are so many different ways you can get creative with the kids, have some fun and learn about Jesus! Here are a few different activities I organised for the grand kids over the past week:
Coloured Eggs:
What you need:
Eggs – hard boiled, cooled.
Dye – Greek Easter egg dye is easily available in local Greek shops. It’s a powder used with warm water and vinegar to fix.
White Crayons (optional)
What to do:
1. Hard boil your eggs prior – they need to be cool. Keep them at room temperature until they are coloured.
2. Draw on the eggs with white crayon, if you like. Crosses stars and names are quite effective.
3. Make your dye-mixture and leave your eggs in it for a few minutes, then fish them out and dry. We had red yellow and green. Red was most effective, because the eggs were brown.
You could also paint the eggs. We had saucers with RYGBW dabs on them and used fine tipped brushes to do spots and dots. Less experienced painters wound up with multi-coloured blobs!
In regards to shelf life of hard boiled eggs. FDA say 1 week with refrigeration.
Some of my Greek and Italian grandma friends, who are old enough to have lived without refrigeration,
say that oiling your painted eggs gives them a lovely gloss, and seals them so they last longer.
Easter Biscuits:
We used prepared gingerbread mix, store bought decorative icing and a range of cutters and rollers.
We rolled out the dough shapes and baked it (we only burnt one tray – cooking is not my strong suit!)
If you don’t want to use store bought icing, simply ice the biscuits using a basic icing recipe of icing sugar and water (melted butter aswell if you like). Decorate with different lollies or M&Ms are effective as well!
Baskets:
You can use Iced coffee or yoghurt containers or the little cartons you buy sour cream in,
Wash out, cut the tops off, and cover with coloured paper, and then staple on a handle each
They are small enough to take a boiled egg or two. Finish off with some stickers and some cotton wool to cushion the eggs.
Palm Crosses:
There’s a YouTube video which shows you how better than I could tell you. (See Below)
We used pandanus, which is rigid and stiff,
Coconut is probably easier to work with , but may not grow where you live.
Jesus Praise Poster:
What you need:
Different coloured/patterned paper clipplings
A4- A3 piece of paper
Black marker
Glue stick or paste
The idea was that the snippings of paper were the coats people threw on the road for Jesus on the donkey!
What to do:
1. Prepare by cutting up pieces of coloured paper.
2.Write “JESUS” in the middle of your A3 piece of paper with your marker. Then draw a road across the page or as a border.
3. Finally let the kids glue all the different coloured pieces of paper around His name, another idea could be drawing or pasting a picture of Jesus on his donkey in the centre of the page to help the kids learn the story.
Much fun was had with glue sticks and colour!
God’s Eye Yarn Cross:
This may be too hard for the under 7 crowd- it needs patience, coordination and concentration!
Click Here for link to wiki-how instructions on how to make it.
As you can see these activities suit a wide age bracket of youngsters. Hopefully you found something you can do with your kids.
Happy Crafting!
Love, Grandma Mary
