Card Making: The Rule Of Thirds

Handmade cards are a really nice way to show you’re thinking of others and offer a personalised and unique option to generic store bought cards. They are also cheaper, so if saving money is something you need to do they are worth looking into.

Contrary to what you make think, you do not need a stack of craft supplies to create fantastic cards. In fact, you probably have all of the supplies you need lying around the house. Children’s artworks, paper of any colour and thickness, ribbons, buttons, glitter and stickers are more than enough supplies to get you started.

After that, all you need to know is this: the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds is actually a design concept I came across at university in my graphic design modules. Basically the rule of thirds is based on the way that our eyes read things on the page.  It dictates that we think about our design in terms of how the eyes see them; and where we place objects on a given page and what are the most effective object placements as a result.

Here is a layout guide for the rule of thirds which can be rotated to suit the orientation of your card. This will work for taller or square cards too. The idea is that you break the card into 2 halves, one is 1/3 and the other is 2/3.

Here are a few examples of finished cards using these principles.
