20 practical ways to organise yourself in the kitchen and make life easier!

  1. Work cleanly in the kitchen; this helps you to stay organised and focused.
  2. After washing blender, remove the small cylinder gap, place inside and put lid on, this airs the blender and allows any lingering smells to escape.
  3. Freeze liquids in useable portions. Eg: wine in ice-cube trays stored in the freezer, ready to be pulled out one at a time and added to pan sauces and stews.
  4. Freeze things as flat as possible and stack them up to save space.
  5. Slice Avocados in their skins and scoop them out when you need them. When you then scoop it out with a spoon, you’ll have slices ready to go, with less mess than trying to fiddle with slippery peeled avocado on a cutting board.
  6. Partially freeze meat before cutting by placing the meat in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes to stiffen it up. This will make cutting much easier!
  7. Keep your kitchen knives sharp – it will speed up the process in the kitchen.
  8. Store Greens and Herbs with a damp paper towel, this will extend their lifespan.
  9. Use egg shells to remove egg shells!
  10. Keep a separate sponge for oily pans.

  13. Avocados aren’t water-soluble, so you can store them cut up in water and they’ll last much longer/won’t get all gunky brown.
  14. When making a soup, sauce, or casserole that ends up too fatty or greasy, drop in an ice-cube, the ice will attract the fat, which you can then scoop out.
  15. Store and use your electronic kitchen scale in a gallon-sized zip-lock bag. You can see through it, and wipe away any spills, and the scale stays pristine.
  16. Dredging bacon in flour before frying will keep it from curling up.
  17. When storing Tupperware, throw in a pinch of salt to keep them from getting stinky.
  18. Save time by peeling and chopping potatoes earlier in the day, simply cover in water until time for use and they won’t go brown!
  19. To clean a microwave oven, add four tablespoons of lemon juice to one cup of water in a microwave-safe bowl. Boil for five minutes in the microwave, allowing the steam to condense on the inside walls of the oven. Then wipe them with a soft cloth. 
  20. To get rid of the smell of garlic from your hands, rub against stainless steel – your sink is ideal. Then wash hands with soap or detergent.
