St Christopher – Saint Of The Week

St ChristopherChristopher

Patron: Of travellers, invoked against storms and plagues

Feast day: July 25th

I am sure many of you pray through St Christopher on car journeys, I know he is the one I call on when travelling. Yet, I never knew much about him..

St Christopher was a martyr. He served the king by waiting at the river side to help any travellers cross the river. One story goes on to say that one day a group of small children tried to get across. Christopher carried them on his shoulders one by one. After one of the young children got safely to the other side he revealed himself as being Jesus Christ. Jesus, the child, renamed ‘Offero’ to Christopher meaning ‘Christ bearer’. He would always be remembered as helping travellers along their way. St Christopher was one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, invoked against the 14th Century plague.

St Christopher, pray for us.
