I was recently at a talk by Fr John Corrigan, who spoke about making a spiritual communion daily. He said St Thomas Aquinas even taught that it was almost as good as receiving the Eucharist sacramentally! So if daily mass isn’t do-able, we can still make a spiritual communion daily and gain the immense graces. Not to mention doing so if public masses are unavailable in your area.
According to this guide from the Newman Parish in Melbourne – “We can make a “spiritual Communion” whenever we expressly desire to receive Our Lord in Holy Communion, even if circumstances impede us from making a sacramental Communion. The graces that we receive from this practice will correspond to the measure of our true hunger for the Holy Eucharist.”
Here are some options for spiritual communion prayers to recite:
I wish my Lord to receive you with the purity, humility and devotion with which your most Holy Mother received you with the spirit and fervour of the saints. Amen
OR
My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to possess You within my soul. Since I am unable now to receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as being already there and unite myself entirely to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
OR
Sweet Jesus, as I cannot now receive Thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though Thou wert already come, I embrace Thyself and unite myself entirely to Thee; never permit me to be separated from Thee!
