FEAST: 13th December 2013
Virgin, Martyr, Patroness of the Blind
St Lucy, whose name literally means ‘light’, is often pictured holding her eyeballs on a dish. Which may not seem like a very nice image, although this was part of her young martyrdom, as her eyes were plucked out as a form of torture. St Lucy is most well known for her persistence in prayer. She prayed at the tomb of St Agatha in Catania for a cure for another and was granted her prayer.
By the governor, St Lucy was being forced to worship false idols, she resisted and only worshiped Christ, which inevitably lead her to her death. Her faith in our Lord was consistent and fruitful. She died a Holy death, where she was miraculous unable to be burnt to death. Afterwards was killed by the sword.
How many of you have been forced or burdened into things you didn’t want to do? How many of you have felt the pressures of the world? This is okay. Feeling the pressures and weights of the world is part of our human nature. It shows us we need God.
We must always look to the cross and seek Christ, and cling to the cross as the Saints did.
In your marriage, you can cling to Christ as He will give you the charity, patience and compassion to live out your vocation in accordance to His will. You can practice calling on Him always, no matter how big or small your problem may be. He is your strength in your temptations and challenges, just as He was St Lucy’s strength.
