Sister Maria Luisa di Gesu, a Naples Dominican, recalls the story of St Philomena through a vision from the Saint herself.
Philomena’s father was a king and him and his family were Christians.
At the young age of 13, Philomena gave herself to the Lord, she took a vow of consecrated virginity. The Emperor Diocletian threatened the king with war, the king tried to make peace in Rome avoiding war. Yet whilst he was negotiating for peace the Emperor feel in love with Philomena. Although, she rejected his marriage proposal. The Emperor tortured Philomena.
He scourged her, attached an anchor to her and threw her in the river and shot her with arrows. Although her story goes that two angels cut the anchor off Philomena, and healed her wounds from the arrows. The Emperor then decided to decapitate the Saint.
Her name Filumena (Philomena in English) means ‘daughter of the light’. Saints whom were deeply devoted to Saint Philomena were St. John Marie Vianney, St. Peter Julian Marie Eymard (1811- 1868), St. Madeleine Sophie Barat (1779-1865).
Many miracles have occurred through her intercession. Philomena showed great humility, purity, purity in prayer, faithfulness and strength, which were all gifts from God.
Saint Philomena, pray for us, our infants, babies and our youth.
