Saint Lucy – Saint Of The Week

Saint LucyLucyofSyracuse

Feast: 13th December

Patronage: Blind

St Lucy, was a beautiful Saint; virtuous and kind.  As a young teenager she devoted herself to Christ and consecrated herself and her virginity to him. She was born into a rich family and was told to marry a rich pagan man. She denied him and pleaded with her mother to let her give her inheritance to the poor. Her mother refused her. Lucy lived in a time where Christians were persecuted for their faith. She would hide away and help people in secret. She would tell them about the love of God and show this through the way she lived her life, faithfully.

At one point Lucy’s mother feel very ill. Lucy took her mother to the shrine of St Agatha where they prayed until they both fell asleep. Lucy received a vision from St Agatha explaining her mother was healed. After this her mother indeed was healed and allowed Lucy to give her inheritance to the poor as she originally asked.

The pagan man which Lucy was betrothed to and refused to marry was angry with Lucy and her mother. He gave St Lucy over to the governor who then ordered soldiers to take her away. The story continues that when Lucy was being taken away the Holy Spirit kept her solid and she could not be moved. She proclaimed the power of Christ and said he was the reason for her strength. They then tortured St Lucy and she died a martyr.

She is the patroness of the Blind.

Saint Lucy, pray for us.
