Saint John Capistrano – Saint Of The Week

Saint John Capistrano

Feast: 23rd October

Patronage: Judges

Saint John, born 1386. He was well educated and practiced as a Lawyer in Naples. He was made governor of Perugia by the time he was twenty six years of age. He had great talent, full education and fought many battles in the army. He was kept imprisoned when fighting against the Malatestas which was the point of his conversion. He vowed to change his life and renew his ambitions in life. He miraculously joined the Franciscan novitiate and four years on he was ordained into the priesthood.

At the age of 30 his life had completely changed.

He ventured over Europe with 12 other Franciscans and rejuvenated the dying faith and devotion. They preached throughout Europe. John helped bring peace between the Greek and Armenian churches.

Along with St James of the March, whom were instructed carefully under St Bernardine of Sienna, they were inspired to institute the devotion to the holy Name of Jesus and His Mother. He travelled throughout Italy; Germany; Bohemia; Austria; Hungary; Poland and Russia.

He fought more spiritual battles and would preach to the army.  He then led the army, under the orders of Pope Callistus III. Whilst preaching to the army he led them to Belgrave to fight the invading Turks and they were victorious in battle. The Turks were against seventy thousand Christians. John fell ill with infection and died October 23rd.

Saint John, pray for us.
