Saint Catherine of Alexandria

Saint Catherine of Alexandriaabout 1507

Feast: 25th November

Patronage: Philosophers, preachers and young girls

I was intrigued to find out more about St Catherine as she is the patron of young girls, which I feel is very relevant to many of us who have daughters; nieces; goddaughters; granddaughters who could spiritually benefit from St Catherines intercession.

Martyr and virgin, Catherine’s life is symbolically an example of the worlds anger in the face of truth. The forces of evil always oppose truth and beauty.

Catherine converted to the faith through a vision, which shortly after she denounced leader, Maxentius for persecuting Christians. He then through his fury burnt fifty converted Christians to death. Marxentius tried to make Catherine deny her faith and offered worldly goods such as a royal, rich and noble marriage, yet she denied him. She was then thrown into prison. Whilst she was in prison she converted Maxentius’ wife and a couple of soldiers.

Catherine was condemned to death. She was placed on a spiked wheel, which at her touch miraculously broke, she was then beheaded. Maxentius also condemned his wife and the converted soldiers.

Over 1,100 years following her martyrdom, St. Joan of Arc identified Catherine as one of the Saints who appeared to her and counselled her.

Saint Catherine of Alexandria, prayer for us.
