Feast: 21st March

Patron of a happy death

St Benedict is the Father of Western Monasticism. He was originally a hermit living in Subiaco after he was educated in Rome. Three years later his holiness was noticed and he was asked by the monks at Vicavaro to be the abbot. He ran a strict and holy order, yet due to his strict nature the monks turned on him and attempted to kill him with poisoned wine.

He made the sign of the Cross over the cup and the cup shattered into pieces. This proved his holiness and relationship with God. The monk worked in the monastery throughout his life. Whilst he was in charge his focus for the monastery was prayer, study and work. During his time, he gave counsel to rulers and popes. His work was very important and spiritual.

St Benedict died 21st March, 543.

FUN FACT: The Benedictine Order has given the church 57, 000 saints (that are known) and 35 popes!
