Feast: February 5th
Patroness: Nurses
St Agatha, known for her purity and devotion to God. She was consecrated to God from an early age and her faith grew as she grew. Later in life she was arrested for her faith and given to a ‘wicked woman’ whom tested and tried to force her into temptation, although she resisted all evil. One source comments on the brutality of her arrest and imprisonment, where she was; stretched, beaten, burnt, had her breasts amputated, rolled on hot coals and if this wasn’t enough, her flesh was torn out by iron hooks.
Through all of this her faith in God didn’t fail. It is said that through St Peters intercession she was healed. Upon her death bed she prayed and shortly died.
An inspiration to all of us St Agatha shows us the power of the virtues of fortitude and chastity. We can look to her as a great example of patience and perhaps gain some perspective when we think of our own daily struggles.
“Lord, my Creator, Thou hast always protected me from cradle. Thou hast taken me from the love of the world and given me patience to suffer. Receive my soul.” Saint Agatha
