Mary did you know is a Christmas song that has divided Christians with its questions posed to the Virgin Mary about her knowledge of the redemptive mission of Our Lord. This Advent, I tried my hand at a less theologically divisive version, instead focusing on the idea of Our Lady meditating – pondering – on her role in our salvation.
Mary, what was it like
To be visited by the Archangel Gabriel?
Mary, what was it like
To sing our your ‘fiat’ to God’s will?
What was it like
To be espoused to the Holy Spirit?
To be a living tabernacle for the Word made Flesh?
Mary, what was it like
To birth the Messiah in a stable in Bethlehem?
Mary, what was it like
To love and nurture the Christ child, to nurse Him at your breast?
What was it like
To flee to Egypt and raise a toddler far from home?
To watch Him grow each day, stand, then totter into your arms?
Mary, what was it like
To return to Nazareth for a life of domesticity and carpentry?
Mary, what was it like
To find Him in the temple, after an anxious three days?
What was it like
To watch the man you raised take up His Father’s work?
To minister to God’s chosen ones, to heal, to teach, to love?
The blind saw His mercy
The deaf heard His love
The dead were raised to new life
The lame leapt for joy
The dumb sang His praises
He came not to be served, but to serve
Mary, what was it like
To watch your Son as He made His long walk to Calvary?
Mary, what was it like
To stand below His cross, and gain John – and all humankind – for a son?
What was it like
To cradle His broken body after He died, nailed to that tree?
And three days later embrace His risen body, robed in majesty?
Mary, what was it like
To be assumed into Heaven, when He called for you?
Mary, what is it like
To embark on apparitions to urge us all closer to your Son?
What is it like
To reign as Queen of Heaven, and of my own heart too?
And love us as your children, because He asked you to?
