Motherhood is challenging. Yes, it can be a wonderful experience but let’s face it, there are moments where we want to tear out our hair or through our hands up in desperation.
Domestic life is relentless, our children are demanding, and the washing pile never completely disappears. Our children can play happily one minute and yet moments later their play has developed into all-out war.
Try as you might, sometimes, your emotions are frayed and the straw has well and truly broken the camel’s back.
In these times I say to you, keep calm. Just like those memes that range from ‘Keep calm and have a coffee’ to ‘Keep calm and Catholic on’ I would suggest you ‘Keep calm and offer it up.’ Sounds easy but how simple do you think it is to:
- Keep calm and offer up the stress of breaking up another fight between your children.
- Keep calm and offer up the annoyance of having to pick up things off the floor after you just cleaned this room.
- Keep calm and offer up the irritability you feel as a result of your sleep deprivation.
- Keep calm and offer up the sleepless nights and early mornings.
- Keep calm and offer up the jealousy you feel as your husband returns home from work and settles himself in front of the television in order to unwind.
At times it’s tough to keep in control of your emotions and prevent them from bubbling over into something spiteful, irrational and unlike you in general. But you don’t have to do this all on your own. You are never alone, even if it might feel like that.
When, in those moments where you feel as though you are losing control and losing your grip on reality, take the time to settle yourself and pray simply ‘Jesus please help me.’
Let Jesus help you quiet your frayed nerves and restore you to a more neutral state.
