Wouldn’t we love to kick back, relax and get a professional facial! We could from time to time I guess. They can however become quite costly and it might be tricky for busy Mums too find the time to do so.
To maintain your healthy skin, you could try some basic at-home facials once a week. These basic facials work on a range of skin types (oily, dry and combination skin). You will also manage to save a bit of money by making your own face masks as most involve using ingredients that you will probably already have in your pantry!
Steps to follow when applying your Facial Mask:
Step 1: Exfoliate
Firstly wash your face, then using your fingers, rub a gentle exfoliating facial scrub in a circular motion on your face. Concentrate on the areas around your face which feel oilier. Rinse your face well, since exfoliating scrubs tend to be drying.
Step 2: Steam
Fill half the sink with boiling water and place a large towel over your head. Close eyes and breathe the steam in deeply for approximately 10 minutes. You can move closer of further from the water depending on your skin sensitivity.
Step 3: Choose a mask and apply
Apply the mask, avoiding the areas around the eyes. I will usually leave my mask on for 10-15 minutes. To wash your mask off, use a washcloth (with warm water) and press it to your face for a couple of minutes. Wash off the mask in a circular motion using warm water.
Step 4: Apply a moisturizer
I like to apply some moisturizer to my face afterward as the skin can tend to feel tight and slightly dry.
Here are 8 different Facial Masks you could try out:
Avocado Facial Mask
This face mask can be used to reduce oil and acne from your face. The lemon in it is a rich source of Vitamin C. I found this mask left my face feeling very soft and smooth.
Method: beat 1 egg white until frothy. Take out the avocado pulp and mash it. Mix it with egg white and one teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply a thick layer and leave it on face for 20 to 25 minutes. Wash it off with warm water.
Sugar Facial Mask
This is a great mask for getting rid of any dry or dead skin particles on your face.
Method: Stir 2 tablespoons of sugar (you can use white or brown) into 3 tablespoons of warm water so that it melts.
Make sure granules are dissolved then apply to the face.
Gently massage around the skin. Rinse with warm water (I prefer to use sugar as exfoliant opposed salt as I find it more gentle on my skin).
Egg White Facial Mask
This mask definitely does the trick when it comes to cleaning out those clogged pores. Even though it may feel a bit strange and smell ‘not great’, it really leaves the skin feeling free of oil and dirt.
Method: Separate egg whites from a couple eggs whisk. Apply to your face. Leave on face for a few minutes then rinse face in warm water, followed by a warm washcloth.
(This is a good one if you have bananas that are turning brown and getting too soft)
This mask will leave your skin feeling soft, smooth and silky.
Method: mash up a medium-sized ripe banana into a smooth paste. Add 3 tbsp plain yogurt, 2 tbsp of honey and mix well. Gently apply it to your face and neck. Let it set for 10 to 20 minutes, then rinse it off with cold water.
Oatmeal Facial Mask
This mask will leave your skin looking better and leave you feeling refreshed in no time!
Method: combine 1/2 cup hot water and 1/3 cup oatmeal. After the water and oatmeal have settled for two or three minutes, mix in 2 tbsp plain yogurt, 2 tbsp honey, and 1 small egg white. Apply a thin layer of the mask to your face and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
This mask is great for cleansing your skin and tightening the pores.
Method: mix 1 tsp plain yoghurt with the juice from a slice of orange, some of the orange pulp, and 1 tsp honey. Leave the mixture on your face for at least five minutes before washing off.
Lemon Facial Mask
This facial mask is known to exfoliate and moisturize your skin.
Method: mix the juice from 1 lemon with 1/4 cup olive oil or sweet almond oil. Apply to skin for 5 minutes before washing off.
Vinegar Facial Mask
A remedy that dates back centuries – so handy as you will probably already have some vinegar in your cupboard.
Method: Mix 1/4 cup cider vinegar with 1/4 cup water. Gently apply the solution to your face and let it dry.
