it your first time flying with bub? This may be a nerve racking experience for some! Check out these tips to make your trip as smooth as possible.
Warm layers – The plane can get pretty cold so I usually dress Jacob in a regular onesie and socks and bring along his pajamas to layer over if the plane does get too cold. I also pack a fresh set of clothes for arrival; for example, pack for your destination – winter jackets and beanie if you’re arriving in a winter country. I carry a spare onesie and two extra pairs of socks (can be used as mittens if hands get cold). I also have a swaddle and blanket on hand. They are useful to line the bassinet or roll up to use as a head rest if your baby decides to sleep in your arms and is leaning off your hands onto the seat divider.
Nappies – I prefer to always pack more just in case, this avoids any accidents which can be stressful when travelling. I took 10 nappies for a 12 hour flight – one for every two hours of the flight and one for each hour it takes for check-in and arrival at destination. I bring Wet wipes and a changing mat as well. I like to have a seperate bag just for wet wipes and a few nappies so that I can take it to the tiny airplane toilet for changes without needing to lug the whole diaper bag or search in my carry on for all the necessary items for a change.
Food – Milk bottles filled with water, milk power portioned out in a formula dispenser container, spoon, baby food, biscuits, bibs and wet wipes. Disposable bibs are helpful but regular ones work too, you will just need to keep soiled bibs or rinse them out and alce them in a freezer bag until you arrive at your destination. If you breastfeed you can save yourself the hassle of bottles!
Toys – I have Jacob’s bedtime buddy, a teething toy and a quiet toy or book to entertain him. Jacob is usually entertained by the little gift he gets on the plane, the headphones, the window shades, the plane itself and the friendly crew. I also flip through the magazines with my son as he is interested in anything new! Walking around the plane is also a new adventure for Jacob and it helps me stretch.
These are the things that I find necessary for flights. There’s no need to overdo it with the toys as in my experience, we ended up playing with toys a lot less than I expected.
