Falling In Love With An Ultrasound

Ok, I’ll admit it. As soon as I see that little baby on the ultrasound machine I go to pieces.

You’d think that after seeing countless images of my children in utero – this baby is my fifth – it would get a little less exciting.

But it doesn’t.

I’m almost halfway in this pregnancy and I’ve already had three ultrasounds. The first, a dating ultrasound, was fairly straightforward and confirmed that my children’s wishes for a set of twins were not going to be fulfilled this time around.

The next ultrasound however, was around the twelve week mark, and there was baby moving around like an acrobat. Limbs, fingers and toes were all accounted for and were wiggled enthusiastically by the wide awake baby who saw each movement of the ultrasound machine as an invitation to play.

And mum? We’ll she’s fallen in love again with a tiny person she won’t get to hold in her hands for at least five months yet…

At the following appointment with my obstetrician at the sixteen week mark, I had a companion – well two actually but Master 20 months fell asleep in the car on the ride over and spent the whole appointment asleep in the pram – Miss 3.

And Miss 3 visibly had the same reaction to the images of the baby on the screen as I had at the previous ultrasound. And it was beautiful.

Her expressions, her excited babble, it was a priceless moment I hope I never forget.

Yes, I did watch the ultrasound and pay attention as baby was measured and their heartbeat broadcast through the room, but I couldn’t help but watch Miss 3 as she too fell in love with the ultrasound images, her new sibling that will join us in March 2016.

And yet I was amazed, all over again, how easy it is to fall in love with the subject of an ultrasound.
