St Patrick’s Day is a solemnity during Lent that is well known for its colourful Irish influences. St Patrick himself is associated with many legends including evicting snakes from Ireland.
But one important legacy is his simple imagery in explaining the Trinity; the humble shamrock.
The following is an easy craft you can make with your children to help them come to understand the reality of the Holy Trinity.
You will need:
- Shamrock template which can be found at the bottom of this post
- Heart template which can be found at the bottom of this post
- 1 A4 sheet green paper
- 1 A4 sheet paper in another colour
- Scissors
- Glue
- Texta
- Small images of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit
What to do:
Print out templates.
Cut one shamrock and 3 hearts from the green sheet of paper.
Glue shamrock onto the contrasting coloured paper.
Write: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. You can add your images here as well if you choose that option.
Fold back a small section of the heart pieces as shown.
Add glue to small section.
Affix heart shape to shamrock so that it covers one of the leaves. This creates a flap the children can lift up to see what is underneath.
Repeat.
Voila! All finished!
Alternative option: If you don’t have any coloured paper on hand you can print the template onto white paper and colour in the shamrock instead before adding the words and images. Then you can cut three hearts from another white piece of paper and colour before attaching to the shamrock using the same method as above.
