DIY Saint Joseph Shrine

He’s the foster father of Jesus and a fabulous patron saint for fathers and family life. We often hang images of Jesus and Mary around our house, and perhaps the Holy Family, but St Joseph is not always at the forefront of our minds.

The following is a tutorial for a DIY shrine that you can add to your prayer table or hang in a prominent place in your house, and remember in a specific way St Joseph’s feast day on March 19, and on his other feast day, St Joseph the Worker on May 1.

You will need:

  • The Shrine image which can be found at the bottom of this post (this is a beautiful image of Joseph and Jesus by artist Corbert Gauthier)

  • Paddlepop sticks
  • PVA glue
  • Thick card
  • String (optional)
  • Scissors

What to do:

Print out the Shrine image.

Cut and glue onto thick card. Cut again.

Begin layering paddlepop sticks in order to make the frame. For added stability I cut a small piece of paddlepop stick and glued it to the top as shown below.

The first layer requires 5 sticks.

Continue layering until you achieve the desired height. I used 5 layers.

Leave it to dry.

The shrine is finished and will stand if you lean it against something. You could add blu-tack to the base to help secure it. If you’d prefer to hang it glue a loop of string to the back of the shrine, underneath the top corner.
