DIY Lamb Costume

Miss 5 was recently a lamb in a school assembly production of ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ and in search of a quick and easy option I used a few things lying around the house to sew up a very cute ensemble.

Because this is very quick and simple it can also be adapted to other animals very easily!

 What you’ll need:

  • Fabric – I choose a white waffle
  • 1inch strip stretch knit fabric
  • 30 cm 1inch wide elastic
  • 60cm 1/2inch wide elastic
  • Beanie
  • Paper
  • Pens
  • Felt in white and grey
  • Sewing machine

What to do:

Apron (Body)

Using an existing shirt of your child’s trace around front neckline and shoulders. Then draw a straight vertical line on each side, at least 10cm longer than the t-shirt to create a pattern piece that looks similar to this:

Pin to your fabric and cut out two pieces.

Pin fabric pieces right sides together along shoulders.

Sew in place.

Fold under raw edges on side seams and pin. Sew.

Repeat for the hem.

For the neckline cut a piece of stretch knit about 1inch wide by the length of your neckline (I used two pieces and sewed them together).

Sew short edges together.

Fold in half lengthways and pin to right side of neckline. Sew in place.

Cut your elastic in half.

Pin each piece on other side of apron, to side seams at around waist height. Sew in place.

Turn right side out.

Hat

Fold a beanie, that fits your child, in half and lay on paper. Trace around and cut out.

Fold fabric in half and line up pattern piece along fold line. Pin in place and cut. Repeat.

You should have two pieces like this:

Make your ears by drawing an ear shape on paper and cut out. Pin to felt and cut 4 pieces, 2 white and 2 grey.

Pin 1 grey piece to 1 white piece. Sew around all edges except the bottom edge.

Turn right side out. Repeat.

Fold ears in half and sew bottom edge like this:

Pin ears to hat piece like this:

Tack in place.

Pin hat pieces right sides together. Sew from bottom seam to the centre of the first curve

Pin from the centre of curve to the centre of the next curve. Sew. Repeat. Continue sewing hat pieces until the seams are closed and a peak had formed at the top.

If your fabric is a stretch one you can just hem the bottom edge and you’re finished. If not, pin under 1inch hem of hat. Sew, leaving an opening to thread through elastic.

Cut a piece of elastic to fit your child’s head, attach to a safety pin and guide through hem.

Sew edges of elastic together and close hem.

Voila! One cute lamb costume.
