Advent Activities: How To Make A Christmas Tree Skirt (Day 12)

If you have a generic fake Christmas tree chances are you find the base fairly unsightly. Here is a quick way to cover up the bottom of your tree and make the whole thing more aesthetically pleasing.

You will need:

  • Two coordinating fabrics (at least 1m of each depending on the size of your Christmas tree base)
  • Knitting needle
  • String
  • Fabric pencil/chalk
  • Ribbon or Velcro
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

What to do:

  1. Measure the base of your tree from the tree trunk to the end of one foot. Add 10cm to measurement. This will be the diameter of your Christmas tree skirt.
  2. Fold your fabrics into quarters. Tie a piece of string to your knitting needle and then to a fabric pencil (a 2B lead pencil will work just as well) so that the distance between the needle and pencil when both are upright is that of your diameter. Put the knitting needle on the middle corner of your quartered fabric and use pencil and needle as a compass to mark out a quarter of a circle. Pin along line then cut.
  3. Once you have cut both fabrics pin right sides together and cut one line so that the circle opens, this is how you open the Christmas Tree skirt to put around your tree. Sew along all seams, leaving an opening of about 10cm on one straight edge in order to turn in out the right way.
  4. Turn out and close seam.
  5. Attach ribbon or Velcro along straight edges and any other embellishments or trims you would like to add. Place around your Christmas tree base and tie ribbon, or close velcro. Voila, one well-dressed Christmas tree!
