Advent Activities: Shortbread Stars (Day 05)

Shortbread is a perennial Christmas favourite and in our house it is no different. Today’s activity is a simple one which the kids will love – what child does not enjoy cooking?

You’ll need:

  • Shortbread recipe
  • 1 cup Plain flour
  • ½ cup rice flour
  • 150g butter, chopped
  • ¼ cup castor sugar plus extra to sprinkle
  • Star cookie cutter

What to do:

Preheat oven to 160°C (140°C fan forced). Sift the flours into a large bowl and add the chopped butter and sugar. Rub butter into the flour with your fingers until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and gather into a smooth ball. Roll between two sheets of baking paper until about 1cm thick. Using cookie cutter cut and place star shapes onto baking trays lined with baking paper. Sprinkle with castor sugar and bake for 35 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.

Enjoy!

We often make these as presents for family and friends and have even substituted gluten free plain flour for family members without any dramas!star biscuits
