A Lenten Calendar

During the season of Advent we set up a wreath and a calendar to help us prepare for Christmas. This year, I’ve decided to apply a similar principle to Lent, and I’m inviting you and your families to join me.

You may be familiar with our Advent Calendar and perhaps even undertook a few of our activities last year. Our Lenten Calendar then, will run in a similar way but with more emphasis on the three pillars of Lent (and Penance in general cf. CCC1434-39):

  • Prayer
  • Fasting
  • Almsgiving

The Lenten Calendar activities then, are undertaken on a weekly rather than daily basis. Each week we will upload a prayer, fasting and almsgiving challenge as well as an activity that ties in with our saint of the week and a craft or cooking activity that you can do with your children to help the whole family prepare for Easter.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Maundy Thursday and its duration is 40 days but that does not include Sundays. Sundays are a rest day, as we are all well aware, but they are also a rest from penitential activities of the Lenten season because on Sundays we worship God and take joy in the day of the Lord (cf. CCC2177-85).

Our Lenten calendar will begin on Shrove Tuesday and will continue over Holy Week to help you arrive at Easter with a heart and home more open to the Resurrected Christ.

The six weeks of Lent and Holy Week for the purposes of this calendar in 2015 are as follows:

Week One: Tuesday February 17 – Saturday February 21

Week two: Sunday February 22- Saturday February 28

Week three: Sunday March 1 – Saturday March 7

Week four: Sunday March 8 – Saturday March 14

Week five: Sunday March 15 – Saturday March 21

Week six: Sunday March 22- Saturday March 28

Holy Week: Sunday March 29 – Saturday April 4
